The community: Gimenoblog

In the Backroom Alberto Gimeno presents his blog Gimenoblog and a short bio:

Hi. I am Alberto Gimeno, I am 21 and I'm in my last year studying Information Technology Engineering at the University of Zaragoza. I have been programming as a hobby for five years. I like programming because it's a form of creativity and innovation with few limitations. To experiment with medicine, chemistry or physics you need laboratories that are out of reach of most people; in the creation of software it is just you and the computer.

My favourite programming language is Java, as much as for the language itself as for the community of programmers and the large number of tools that are available. Recently I have been interested in the different technologies of data persistence (JDBC, Hibernate, JDO, etc.), in 'good practices' and also in the usability and ergonomics of the user interface.

I don't only program as a hobby; I have been working for a little over a year building web applications.

I recently found Planeta Codigo and I hope to bring my grain of sand to the community.

The top 10 web design mistakes of 2005

Patxi Echarte in EsLoMas.com comments on the article, Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005 by Jakob Nielsen.

  • Legibility Problems. Font size is often too small and can't be changed by the user in the browser. The contrast between the font and the background can be low.

  • Flash. There are still web sites using Flash for graphics where a simpler picture will do. Flash is a programming environment and should be only be used to overcome the limitations of static pages and rarely for navigation. There are still people who insist on Flash splash screens and intros which serve only to annoy.

  • Content That's Not Written for the Web. The web is a new medium and should be used as such. It requires a different approach to the printed word.

  • Browser Incompatibility. Although most people use Internet Explorer, a significant number have started using other browsers. It is important to make an effort to ensure that the web site can be viewed with any browser.

  • No Contact Information or Other Company Info. It seems incredible, but there are still sites where no contact information can be found.

Guinness Advert “Evolve”

Completely off topic, and nothing to do with anything Spanish, but I can't resist posting a link to the new Guinness advert Evolve.
