dsevilla in diego sevilla writes that his friend, Boris Kolpackov, one of the most intelligent people that he knows, and one who knows C++ as well as anyone, has just released his library libcult. The name hints at a cult of those using C++. In the library you can find gems in C++ that are difficult to find elsewhere. It offers things like parsers, XDR generators, a well designed library of command line options, utilities to obtain the type of a variable at execution time, etc. The most interesting thing about this code, apart from its usefulness, is how well it has been written. The documentation in English is available. dsevilla in diego sevilla writes that Pedro Martinez, a student at the University of Murcia, is going to take part in Google's Summer of Code. He will work for the project Mono in implementing a control called Windows.Forms 2, We wish him good luck. Juan Palacio in Navegapolis comments on the article in Version Cero which asks if there are too many programmers. He finds that the term "programmer" is ambiguous and can mean different things. If we use the term in its widest sense, then it will never be possible to do without programmers except in the realm of science fiction. However if we take a more narrow meaning, converting a design into source code, then this is precisely what the CASE tools are trying to achieve. The degree of sophistication of such tools may be currently rather poor, but with time they will no doubt improve. They can be compared with machine language translation where, although results currently serve only to give an idea of the meaning of a text, they are better than those that would be produced by bad language students. |
