Introduction to web metrics Part III
Introducción a las métricas web (Parte III)

jleyva in  Métricas Web continues his series of articles on web metrics with an explanation of Web Page Significance.

The importance of a web page can be considered from two perspectives: its relevance with respect to a need for knowledge or a specific search, and its quality in absolute terms, independent of any specific needs

  • Relevance. A web page is relevant with respect to a search if the user can find the information that she is looking for on the page or a link to another web site that contains this information. There are various algorithms to calculate the relevance of a web site; some algorithms evaluate the structure of the links on the site, others are based on a model of the vector space that represents the documents and the searches to calculate their similarity, others are based on the frequency with the search term appears in the web site.
  • Quality. The most recent studies on Internet searching seem to suggest that the quality of a web page is related to the structure of the links that it offers. A link from a page "p" to a page "q" means that p supports or helps q. It is generally assumed that if a page links to another it is because they are about similar subjects and the importance of a web page can be measured by the number of links to it. Another measure of the importance of a web site is the probability of that web site being visited.

Carlos Rovira in  carlosrovira.com reports on the big news for Flash developers in news.com that Macromedia aligns with Eclipse”. It appears that Macromedia is listening to the developer community and is choosing the Open Source path for its future strategy. It is already possible to develop Open Source Flash applications using FAMES (an IDE based on Eclipse and MTASC with some plugins). Carlos recommends anyone with an interest in open source Flash to follow the mailing list on  osflash.

Confirmado: Apple switching to Intel

The author of  Retrato en Sepia writes on the confirmation by Steve Jobs that Apple will use Intel processors. It appears that Intel will not be making the PowerPC chips on which the MacOS X runs now, and that the operating system will run on the same chips that are used for the PC.
